[census 1881]

Jane moved her children back to her birthcounty Kent and in 1881 we find them in Four Throws near Hawkhurst where Jane is making a living as a dressmaker and the children are all at school
Living with them is Janes' younger sister Julia and Elizabeth Atwell, domestic servant. Elizabeth must have come with them from the Isle of Wight, her birthplace is listed as Ventnor, Isle of Wight.

census 1891, Hawkhurst, Kent

In 1891, Edith, now 19, is the only sibling still living with her mother. Herbert, 20, is a bookseller living in Islington with Janes' older sister Marianne; Alice has moved to Leicester to live with her aunt Phoebe (Dyer) Clarke, where she is studying to be a teacher and Winifred is living in East Molesley, Surrey as a stationers apprentice to a Richard Fox.
